APADFTMOM Day 1: Introduction, and Oh God What Am I Doing
What’s up, internet? It’s ya boy ConfectionWitch here with a new pet project for the month of May that has no title and came to exist at the ass end of April as a spur-of-the-moment thing. Don’t forget to smash that Subscribe button and ring that notification bell so you know when the party’s starting. Haha. Ha.
I’m ConfectionWitch and I love manga. Reading manga has been a hobby of mine for well over a decade, and with time I’ve focused more and more on it until it’s become my primary hobby and how I spend a lot of my free time. I started reading Naruto when I was 12 years old, and now in 2019 at the age of 26 I’ve read over 300 series with a combined total of 26,000 chapters. Most of that came from the past five years, but around here we never forget our humble beginnings.
Back in March I noticed that I had a horrible reading habit where I would start a manga series and drop it for no reason other than to start a new series. To help regulate this, I started a little challenge with myself: I bought a calendar, picked 2 manga series, and started filling in every day with a chapter quota for those two series. That quota ends when I either finish the series or catch up with its most recently released chapter, and then the next day a new series takes its place. In cases where I catch up with a series, I add that to my ever-expanding list of ongoing series that I read when new chapters are released.
For the entirety of May I’m giving myself another challenge: Write about manga. The idea is to write about 1 series per day without putting too much thought into it - No editing, no major revisions, no anything. For now this is a personal challenge because I enjoy writing, but it’s also something I’ve been thinking about doing for a long time.
My goal with writing each piece is to put out a mostly spoiler-free overview of a series and go into a bit of detail about its merits and why it’s worth reading. Initially I was thinking of doing some sort of review series because it seemed easier, but I have a very specific format in mind and it leans more towards recommendations instead of reviews. I have generally positive views towards almost everything manga-related and it takes a lot for me to hate something, and personally I believe that type of mindset can come off as ass-kissy in terms of reviews. I would much rather put out content focused on hyping up a series in a way that makes you, the reader, interested in checking it out and forming your own opinion of it. Whether you end up loving or hating it, the important thing to me is that you took the time to read it.
Ultimately I just want to help people read more manga. It’s a wonderfully large form of entertainment that has something for everybody, and it’s just a matter of finding it. Whether it’s an issue of having never bothered looking into what the medium has to offer or having an interest in manga but deciding to overlook something because it’s unappealing on the outside, I want to see if I can convince you to read more. Just reading this far in this introduction is more than I could ever ask of you, but allow me to be a little selfish and request that you come back again tomorrow.
